Why Karma Works? Garchen Rinpoche, one of the last living Masters from Old Tibet, has said that of all the traditional \u201cFour Thoughts\u201d essential to authentic practice, Karma is most important \u2013 which made an impression on us. Why is Karma so important? When the Buddha spoke of karma, he was referring to intention (as said in the Dhammapada \u201cIntention precedes experience.\u201d) This notion that, if we act with a positive motivation, happiness follows us like our own shadow \u2013 and if we act with a negative intention, suffering follows us \u2013 is the core of Buddhism. On a daily level, most people sense that actions follow the doer, and that (generally speaking) karma is valid. Within a Buddhist worldview, the notion of Karma carries the consciousness of individuals into a physical rebirth. But fundamentally, either understanding of Karma both fits with reality, and helps us see the way that our intentions shape our lives \u2013 and the world around us. We are both Buddhist practitioners who have been in retreat as much as we can for over 15 years. We recently completed a long-term retreat in Crestone Colorado, and decided to move to the Adirondack Mountains of New York, with the aspiration to find a functional middle way. Our aspiration is to be able to spend half of every year in retreat, and the other half working to offer what we can to others, and the broader community. One of several projects we've decided to undertake is Karma Works. We started this brand to offer sustainably made, dharma-related daily items as a support for our own and others' daily practice. The sales will go toward improving the retreat place we have, and helping to make it into a place we can share with others who might like to come join us in retreat.<\/p>
The property is 45 acres, bordered by hundreds of acres of state land (and generally surrounded by thousands of acres in the Adirondack Park.) There is one main structure, and one Tiny House specifically built for meditation (with extensive sound insulation, solid ventilation, and an open but isolated feel.) Our current plan is to offer the Tiny House to those who might like to come and share this location with us for their own retreats.
